Local Government Act of Japan started 60 years ago and JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM has been started in commemoration. There are 47 prefectures in Japan. The silver coin whose face value is 1,000yen and the bi-color clad coin whose face value is 500yen, are to be published one by one as memorial coins.
This is 500 yen coin of SHIGA Prefecture. SHIGA prefecture is located in HONSHU Island JAPAN and is occupied one-sixth by Lake Biwa that is the largest lake in Japan. The design on the obverse side is Biwako-oo-Namazu(Lake Biwa catfish) and Nigorobuna which are endemic species of Lake Biwa.
