Local Government Act of Japan started 60 years ago and JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM has been started in commemoration. There are 47 prefectures in Japan. The silver coin whose face value is 1,000yen and the bi-color clad coin whose face value is 500yen, are to be published one by one as memorial coins.

 This is 500 yen coin of AKITA Prefecture. AKITA prefecture is located in the northern part of HONSHU Island JAPAN and faces Japan sea. The design on the obverse side is the portrait of NOBU SHIRASE and KANTO FESTIVAL.


  Nobu Shirase was Japan army officer and explorer. He was born in AKITA prefecture in 1861. He led the first expedition to the Antarctic regions as Japanese in 1912.

  Kanto-Matsuri is a festival of AKITA and held at the beginning of August every year. This festival is one of 3 major festivals of northern part of Japan along with Sendai Tanabata Festival and Aomori Nebuta Festival. Kanto is a key component which has a long rod attached many paper lanterns. The biggest Kanto is 12m long and has 46 paper lanterns and weighs 50kg. They exhibit the special perforamnce of lifting Kanto such as on their sholder, head, waist.
