Local Government Act of Japan started 60 years ago and JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM has been started in commemoration. There are 47 prefectures in Japan. The silver coin whose face value is 1,000yen and the bi-color clad coin whose face value is 500yen, are to be published one by one as memorial coins.

 This is GIFU 500 yen coin. GIFU is located in the center of HONSHU Island Japan. The obverse design of this coin is a traditional house in SHIRAKAWA-GOU of GIFU prefecture. SHIRAKAWA-GOU is in snowy region and traditional houses are built to withstand the weight of snow. This type of houses is called GASHO-TSUKURI. There remains many GASHO-TSUKURI houses in SHIRAKAWA-GOU area and this area is designated a World Heritage Site.
